What is the relationship between humans and pigeons? Like most people, I have always thought that pigeons are dirty, disease-carrying, and therefore uninteresting animals, until a few months ago I came across an article about some Belgian racing pigeon species worth lots of money.
Pigeons are primarily bred as a hobby for beauty, long-distance races, and other types of competitions. Often those competitions involve money and breeding pigeons become a business.Although nowadays there are many pigeon owners, those communities are still very hidden and not well known. Clubs are present in our cities and fairs are happening globally but it seems to be quiet and not that much exposed.Through this project, I want to explore those hidden communities, in the Netherlands where it’s an old tradition, and in Italy to explore how the people from where I come to deal with them.
